Welcome back to Joey’s Craft Soda Review! If you follow the Craft Beverage Jobs blog then you know that as a rule, we do NOT do reviews. There are plenty of review blogs out there and they do a great job highlighting craft beverages. We stick to careers and industry news.
However, there is always an exception to every rule. Meet our exception, Joey Godinez! Joey is a 15 year old who not only loves to drink craft soda but loves to write about it as well. We were so impressed with Joey’s skills that we invited him to review one craft soda each month and share his review as our guest on the Craft Beverage Jobs Blog. We think you will be impressed!
Joey’s Craft Soda Review
It smells somewhat citrusy to me, but the scent that pops out the most for me would be black licorice…
I’m Joey. I like craft soda, a lot. In my opinion I feel that craft sodas have a lot more to offer than a mass produced soda not only in taste, but in variety and quality of ingredients used in their production. This is a big reason why I generally enjoy craft sodas, and I also think that drinking them and reviewing them is a great way to support the generally smaller companies that produce these beverages.
Saiteaux Absinthe Soda
History: Absinthe is a distilled spirit flavored with anise, wormwood, fennel, and other types of herbs. The exact origin of asbinthe is unknown, but the earliest modern use dates back to the late 1700’s in Switzerland where it saw use as an all purpose remedy for different ailments. The drink was banned by several countries in the early 1900’s and has since been revived at the end of the century.
Aesthetics: Saiteaux Absinthe has a pretty looking bottle, that’s for sure. The label looks knda old-timey and fun, and the glass itself is a pretty green color. (7/10 rating)
Scent: It smells somewhat citrusy to me, but the scent that pops out the most for me would be black licorice, which I don’t love, but I don’t hate either. (7/10 rating)
Carbonation: Kinda weak, but I also know I love the bubbles more than most, so there may be some bias there. (5/10 rating)
Taste: To be honest, I have no idea what absinthe is supposed to taste like, and from what I’ve heard I don’t really want to. That being said, this was pretty tasty. I’m not really good at picking apart flavors, but a few things really stand out. Above all, I get citrusy notes, some bladk licorice, and honey. I’m not a fan of black licorice, but this was better than just bearable. (6/10 rating)
Overall: I have no idea whether or not this actually tastes like absinthe, but considering all the horrible things I’ve heard about it, it probably doesn’t. Way better than I expected though, and people who like black licorice would probably love it. (6/10 rating)
