Look who’s back! It’s our resident craft soda expert Joey Godinez with another craft soda review.
If you’re new to Craft Beverage Jobs, we met Joey in 2014. The CBJ team was so impressed with Joey’s love for craft soda that we invited him to share his reviews with our blog. Some soda’s make the grade and some don’t, but it’s always a pleasure reading Joey’s perspective on craft carbonated POP!
Joey’s Craft Soda Review
I’m Joey. I like craft soda, a lot. In my opinion, I feel that craft sodas have a lot more to offer than a mass produced soda not only in taste but in the variety and quality of ingredients used in their production. This is a big reason why I generally enjoy craft sodas, and I also think that drinking them and reviewing them is a great way to support the generally smaller companies that produce these beverages.
Zuberfizz Creamy Root Beer
I’ve always enjoyed root beer, and it’s always been my favorite variety of soda. It’s one of the few things I can drink in any weather. In the summer I enjoy root beer as a sweet, refreshing treat. In the winter it’s a smooth, rich, creamy drink that I could almost compare to hot chocolate in a weird sort of way. My first craft soda was a root beer, and it’s been one long journey from there, which brings us to our newest specimen.
Today’s review is Zuberfizz Creamy Root Beer, a refreshing, if predictable, change of pace compared to some of the other sodas I’ve reviewed lately. Competing in a class of my favorite sodas, I’m expecting this to be one may be the NEW favorites. Hopefully it won’t disappoint. Well, let’s get on with the show!
So… there’s not much to dig about the label. I feel like I’ve seen it before, not literally but it just seems sorta generic, though I might be the only one who thinks so. Along with a disappointing label is the disappointing fizz. At this point I feel like I may have to strip these factors from my reviews due to the general dissatisfaction I tend to express in these categories.
On a more positive note, this stuff definitely smells like good root beer! It doesn’t seem like a big deal to some people but when you’ve tried as many root beers as I have then you start to experience some of the bizarre odors that come out of the woodwork.
There’s a very familiar, very “mainstream” smell to it. It’s also very creamy, which is a recurring characteristic in most of the root beers I tend to enjoy. Definitely a redeeming positive quality. As far as taste goes, just like the smell, it’s familiar, mainstream, safe. There’s a very A&W vibe to it, not identical, but not dissimilar. Creamier, more chocolaty, and sweeter than A&W with less bite as well. Very “kid friendly” in a way.
Overall I’d give Zuberfizz Creamy Root Beer a 6.5. It’s good, but not as good as I’d hoped. You can probably be equally satisfied with some of the bigger name brands such as Barq’s, A&W, or Mug root beer. These name brand root beers have the added benefit of being cheaper and easier to find.
