What do you get when you cross a degree in economics, an entrepreneurial spirit and a love for hard cider?
Answer: Buskey Cider Co. in Richmond, Virginia.
Buskey Cider Co. is the passion project of Will Correll, which began as an idea while he was studying economics and commerce at Hampden-Sydney College. Teaming up with former Napa Valley Winemaker, Matthew Myer, the duo are tapping into the rich cider history of Virginia.
Buskey Cider has established its roots in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond. Cider is one of the fastest growing industries in craft beverage today and Richmond is one of the hottest cities for craft brewery start-ups. Correll believes this is the perfect combination for a successful cider brewery.
In an interview with RichmondBizSense.com, he stated,
The cider industry is very much following the trends of the craft brewing industry, and cider consumption is rising.
Correll has been careful to build social responsibilities into his buisness strategy. Busky Cider will be producing thier cider in cans, which are 100% recyclable and produce lower carbon immisions through the production process. Sourcing locally will also boost the economy and build lasting busniess relationships. Correll states that as a small business you have to make a lot of decisions “in the moment” but the decision to do the right thing or not was a part of their plan from the beginning.
The Craft Business Of Cider
Drinkers are not just indulging in craft beer these days. The hard cider industry has been on the rise for the past three years, offering choices for the growing numbers of craft beverage lovers across the United States. A promising component is the demographic for cider drinkers. With a strong appeal to women, industry experts estimate that cider drinking is 50/50 between men and women.
Another highlight for the hard cider business is the $Billion gluten-free lifestyle trend taking the nation by storm. Cider is naturally gluten-free and gives craft beverage drinkers a tasty alternative to craft beer.
While more craft beer breweries find a home in Richmond, Busky Cider is making a name for itself even before the doors are open. With an award-winning business plan and well funded foundation, Busky Cider is making plans to dominate the craft beverage scene in Richmond and beyond.
