Coffee Gifts For The Holidays Under $500
Holiday Gift List – Coffee Geek
These coffee gifts are not for the casual drinker. The guys at CoffeeGeek.com have put together a list of amazing brewers, kettles, espresso machines, and coffee kits sure to make the coffee lover in your family giddy with delight.
Just a sampling of what you will find – Royal Belgian 500ml Balance Brewer: Balance brewers were based on the siphon coffee brewing method, and came out within a decade of the siphon brewer’s invention (1840 for siphon brewers, 1850 for balance brewers). These were also the world’s first “automatic coffee makers” in that they would automatically shut off through the elevated balance of the hot water kettle on the right side: as the kettle emptied of water (which moves over to the left side to brew), the kettle would rise, and a cap would then flip closed on the cloth wick heater below, stopping the heat.
With no more heat, the steam inside the kettle would revert back to water, create a vacuum, and suck all the brewed coffee back over from the brewing vessel. All this was done hands off – as the operator, all you had to do was add ground coffee to the left side, add water to the right side kettle, put a flame to the cloth wick, and let the device do the rest!
Global Search For Perfect Coffee Ends In North Yorkshire
Global search for perfect coffee ends in North Yorkshire, by Emily Flanagan – Darlington & Stockton Times
David Beattie’s journey from chemical engineer to coffee trader has been an unusual one.
It began when he took a break from his work as an engineer on Teesside and took a train from Middlesbrough at the start of a journey around the world. He travelled across Europe, Hong Kong, Russia, Mongolia and China. But it was in the Sumatran jungle that he met the group of coffee farmers who altered the course of his life.
“I tried to help them by selling their crop – I wanted people to buy their coffee – but the cost and risk was too great,” he said.
That was when he hit upon the idea of creating his own coffee roastery back home in the UK. With the help of a Harrogate-based speciality coffee importer, he is able to help coffee farmers by paying a sustainable wage for good quality coffee from the North Yorkshire village of East Rounton.
He and partner Tracy Lee began work on their business in September last year. About six months ago they began working full time with the business. They were recently named specialist retailer of the year in the Flavours of Herriot Country Awards for 2014.
I was a chemical engineer in Teesside and the whole production of process of roasting coffee and the different methods relate to engineering. A lot of coffee roasters are ex-engineers in some capacity. – David Beattie
Philanthropic Coffee
Carabello Coffee Launches Kickstarter, Philnathropic-minded coffee company is looking to expand, donate more, by Maija Zummo – City Beat
Carabello Coffee in Newport, Ky., is a philanthropic coffee shop and roastery owned by husband and wife Emily and Justin Carabello. As a craft coffee bar, they have all the latte art and pour-overs you’d expect, but they also do something unexpected — the business gives back by turning over a portion of their profits to third world coffee regions in Nicaragua and Kenya.
The couple had a vision for the shop in 2009, with the idea to start a company that would source coffee equitably and sell it to the U. S., investing the profits in sustainable initiatives in third world coffee communities. The Carabellos have visited these regions in Africa and Central America, sourcing their beans from coffee farms and helping the community by doing outreach and raising money for an orphanage in Nicaragua, where some of the world’s best coffee is grown. The kickstarter campaign Carabello just launched is not only aimed at helping Carabello itself expand, but also expand the amount of good they can do. Their goal is to eventually be able to give away $100,000 a year.
Coffee: Stimulating Business In Africa
Coffee – a stimulant for business, by James Jeffrey – DW/Africa
Addis Ababa’s increased number of coffee roasters and cafes reflects the emergence of new drinking habits, especially among young professionals. ‘They do not have time to sit at home for an hour roasting coffee,’ said Getachew Woldetsadick, marketing manager for Alem Bunna, another coffee-roasting company. Like Tomoca, Alem Bunna wants to access new African markets, followed by Europe and Asia.
